Hi there,

I never do this sort of thing, and I don't want to be annoying, or to bother you, but I wanted to talk with you about the election. I know you're really busy, but I think this is important, and if you could take a few minutes, I'd really appreciate it. If you know anyone that should see this info, please pass it along to them, as well.

I don't know about you, but I'm tired of no longer being able to feel fully proud of Canada. I've lost pride in this country because of the damaging actions that the current Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, has taken on our behalf. I don't think he represents what Canada stands for, and I'm embarrassed that he is representing us to the rest of the world. In case you're not familiar with some of the things he's done, and is planning to do on your behalf, I've put together a website that details what he has done at http://WhyNotHarper.ca

Here are some quick highlights:

1) Shut down Parliament twice, and was found to be in contempt of Parliament on March 25th, 2011. This is the reason that you're being called to vote on May 2nd.

2) Cheated in the 2006 Election. Currently 4 Conservatives, including 2 Conservative senators are under investigation and face possible jail time.

3) Loosened regulations to allow up to 100 times more chemical residues on your food, and to allow corporations to self-test, reducing oversight.

4) Massive deficit. In 1993, the Conservatives amassed a $38 Billion deficit. By 2006, under non-conservative leadership, this was turned around into a $16 Billion surplus. Four years later, Harper has returned us to a national deficit: a record $56 Billion.

5) Privacy invasion. The Conservatives have vowed to implement unprecedented levels of monitoring on Canadian internet activities. What's most worrisome about this, is that it would be implemented without any court oversight.

6) Shut down all foreign aid. This includes aid sent to some of the poorest nations on earth, to which Canada was previously a large contributor. Our reputation is being tarnished from that of a peace keeping and aide giving nation, to one which is greedy and war faring.

The reason these examples are so upsetting to me is because the Canada I know is not a narrow minded conservative country. The Canada I know is compassionate, forward thinking, and I believe that the current prime minister does not represent us. The polls show that the vast majority of voters are intending to vote for a liberal party (NDP, Liberal, Bloc, Green), while the minority intend to vote Conservative.

How can it be that our country is being governed by Conservatives, if the majority of its people have strong liberal views? The problem is that there is only one conservative party, while liberal votes are being splintered between multiple liberal parties. The result is that as we stand divided, we're looking down the barrel of another Conservative Harper Government.

What needs to happen to stop Harper?
1. We need voters with liberal views to vote in record numbers.
2. We need those intending to vote Conservative to truly see what they're voting for. (note: those without internet are those most likely to vote Conservative.)
3. We need to vote strategically.

What steps can you take?

1. Today, make sure that you're on the electoral list by contacting Elections Canada. 1-800-463-6868

2. Today, visit http://ProjectDemocracy.ca, to see which non-conservative party has the best chance of winning in your riding, so you can vote strategically.

3. Today, talk to people in your life about how important it is to vote strategically. Use your networks, send messages, and make phone calls. Talk to your parents, to your grandparents, to your friends and to your family about their intentions for voting. Show them this website, and print these facts out for them. Make sure they're aware of what Harper has done on their behalf, and that if they don't vote against him on May 2nd, that he will continue to represent them.

That he will continue to represent Canada.
